As if we could be rational

A response to Engin F. Isin’s “The Neurotic Citizen.” As explored through one’s decision-making process around what menstrual products to use, the piece shows the overlapping internal dialogues and external pressures to simultaneously be an environmental citizen (reduce waste, reduce water), a good, clean citizen (not have blood on your hands, leave no trace, not be menstruating to begin with), and an empowered individual in a space of historic stigmatization and seclusion. These demands are simultaneously at odds, and statistical and anecdotal information bombardment does little to create a place of belonging for the citizen whose decision cannot be logical.
